In the 1939 register, a labourer, he was at 107 Downfields, Soham with his father Arthur [24-11-1886] labourer; mother Mauid [15-6-1888]; brothers John [2-11-1912] labourer, William Sidney [24-2-1917] farm labourer; George [2-3-1923] farm labourer and Frederick [8-8-1924] mill hand; sisters Lilian [8-9-1920] and Elieen M ]17-9-1930] later Mrs KENT. There are 2 closed records. Probate records give his address as Downfield, Soham, administration to his father Arthur, a farm labourer. |
James was captured on 15th February 1942, the day Singapore was surrendered to the Japanese. The 4th and 5th Norfolks were,
like the 1st & 2nd Cambridgeshires, and 4th and 5th Suffolks, fighting to the last minute in the Adam Road - MacRitchie Reservoir area.
He died working on the Siam-Burma railway. His PoW card gives his date of birth as 26th March. Originally buried at Hon Tok Camp No.1 he was re-interred in Kanchanaburi on 19th February 1946. |
